June’s meeting will be held on June 11. Check back for details

LMUG is a group of people who meet regularly each month to discuss Apple products and the great variety of Mac and iOS software. Each meeting typically starts with a round-up of the latest news in the Apple world and this is followed by a 10 minute look at a piece of software that one of our members wants to show to the group. After this we open the floor to a Q&A session, before retiring to the bar or ordering some food ready for the main event, typically an expert speaker or a number of Special Interests Groups such as photography; beginners or iPad.

Our meeting are members-only affairs, but you are welcome to join as a guest (there is a gate fee of £3) or buy annual membership on the night for just £15.

For more details on our meetings, check our Meetings page.

himself.

Artist Paul Kercal will be leading us around some of his favourite
And touch’. Now the rampant rumours can turn from the day of the unveiling to the actual product to be unveiled.

Of course all the smart money is riding on the iPad 3 which is what looks to be on the invite. The iPad in just two years has become a massive success for Apple, a success that other manufacturers are finding hard to compete against.

Some are only now starting to catch up but is Apple about to jump ahead again and leave the competition trailing once more?

Want to see what Apple has in store within a room of like minded individuals?

Want to experience the event as it happens?

Want to be able to order a beer as the excitement builds?

Want to have the chance to taste some wonderful Thai food?

Want to be part of an podcast immediately following the announcement?

If the answer is yes to any of those questions then head on down to the Wood Marylebone pub in Marylebone.

There will be three projector screens displaying all the best feeds we can find and instant reactions to each announcement. Then a live recording of the Bagel Tech Mac podcast, hosted by Ewen Rankin will take place where you may get the chance to share your views with thousands of listeners.

So please feel free to pop along and bring a friend for a memorable evening of information and entertainment.

The Wood Marylebone pub is located at 21 Balcombe Street, Marylebone, NW1 6HE. The evenings events are planned to start from 5:30pm.

A big thank you to Paul Dixon at Macsessed and Paul Kercal for creating the images for this event.

It had been billed as a rather special night for an LMUG meet and it certainly didn't disappoint...

It had been billed as a rather special night for an LMUG meet and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The regular members filled the basement of The Wood pub in Marylebone as the activities got underway.

The first surprise of the night was then revealed. Betsy Weber from TechSmith informed us all that TechSmith would be paying for all the drinks for the night as well as laying on some food later in the evening. This was obviously received with great enthusiasm by all gathered and the drink soon started flowing.

Gareth Mills presented NewsByte as Paul has unfortunately been ill of late. I’m sure we all wish Paul a speedy recovery so he can get back to presenting NewsByte soon, however Gareth performed a wonderful job in presenting all the Apple news of interest since our last meeting.

Gareth also presented this months Software Snap shot and dedicated the segment to Apple’s AirPlay. If you have yet to experience the simplicity of this innovative technology you really must correct that oversight immediately. The ability to simply stream content from your iDevice to an Apple TV2 or an Airport Express is amazing.

The snapshot was followed by the Q&A session and both the questions and answers will be available shortly on this site.

A buffet, again supplied by the generous TechSmith, was made available and the gathered masses gratefully filled their plates as well as their stomachs.

The raffle was drawn next with the prize being a copy of Snagit and Camtasia 2. Both items again made available by Betsy and TechSmith and worth around £120. Once the lucky recipient had collected his prize our esteemed Communications Officer, Steve Naybour, declared, with much Steve Jobsian aplomb, that there was ‘one more thing’. This being that EVERYBODY present received their own fully licensed copy of Snagit and Camtasia 2 free of charge. As you can imagine the response to this was highly positive, enthusiastic and loud to say the least.

Betsy then took to the mic to demonstrate what this excellent software can do in the way of screen captures and screen recordings. Her demonstration was very informative and made us all eager to try out our new software.

With that a very special LMUG meeting was drawn to a close and we all departed well fed and watered with new software to try on our wonderful Macs.

Thank you Betsy and thank you TechSmith for your wonderful generosity.

Q. How do I stop programs auto-correcting my typing. It happens in Apples apps like Numbers and Bento and gets it wrong.
A. In Bento you can turn it off for specifc fields. There’s a specifc part of the Inspector where you can control the formatting

Q. I have a Virgin modem and Airport Express. The Airport is flashing orange but still works. Is it dying?
A. No. Make sure your firmware is up to date.

Q. My iDVD application has gone wrong. It keeps asking for the feeds. I tried updating the OS but it didn’t work.
A. There is an application called Pacifist that lets you get inside application packages. Might be easier to delete the app and re-install it from Disc – discuss offline…

Q. I have a problem with sidebar icons in the Finder. Icons I put in there don’t work and can’t be deleted. How do I sort that out in Lion.
A. Try to command-drag it out. Or try holding down the Option key. Also try repairing permissions.

Q I have a problem with Virgin mail in Safari. Can’t download attachments, it’s asking me to log into Googlemail which I can’t use.
A. Virgin mail not great. Try using another browser e.g. Chrome.

Q. I have been using Pages with AppleScripts. I want to transfer my AppleWorks dictionary because I don’t want to use US English.
A. You can set the language for each document, at least. Unlikely to be able to import your AppleWorks dictionary.

Q. Who owns an iPad? Why do you want an iPad 3?
A. Don’t care what it does, want it. iPad 1 may get sold to pay for the upgrade.

This month’s main topic will be:

Art on iOS Devices

Our Programme:

7:00pm NewsByte
7:10pm Software Snapshot (OmniOutliner for iPad)

7:20pm announcents and Q&A 7:35pm Break (drinks and raffle)

8:00pm Paul Kercal will deliver a talk on making artworks on iOS devices:

Despite an almost head turning series of student cleaning, trolley pushing and wine bottling jobs Paul Kercal accidentally fell into computer games animation, youth work and next-gen graphics teaching instead.

For the past three years Paul has drawn too many pictures on iPod touch, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4s, iPad 1 and iPad 2. Oh, and a Nintendo DSi for a break. He foolishly believes anyone can draw and, if you come to the Lmug evening with art rage, brushes, ideas or any other art app we’ll put that possibility to the test. Bring styli for a comparison session.

Raffle prize this month: Art Software

You are welcome to join LMUG at the low rate of £15 per person or pay a gate fee of £3 which is refundable on joining. This cost covers the operating expenses of the club such as display equipment and facilities.

Are you the type of person who doesn’t particularly like just having their iPhone lay lazily on your desk like a reclining supermodel? Wouldn’t it be far better if you could prop the little blighter up and always have it’s display available for information purposes. Well in the past the obvious choice was a dock, but these tend to be a bit on the big side and a little cumbersome to carry around with you. What you need is something small, light, elegant and functional.

Enter the Glif.

The Glif is a Tripod mount and stand all in one. It is made from recyclable rubberised plastic that is light and feels good in your hand. You simply slide your iPhone into one of its many mount positions and there you go. Your iPhone is perfectly tilted both in landscape and portrait positioning ready for inspection at a moments notice.

As previously stated the Glif can also double up as a mount for a tripod. Simply slide the phone into the Glif and its ready to be screwed onto a tripod shoe for those times you want a super steady shot, such as at night.

The Glif was originally designed by a two man team of Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost when they formed their company Studio Neat. It was their first product and like so many startups now days they used Kickstarter to finance their idea. Some 5,273 backers and $137,417 later their product was ready for the world.

You can pick up a Glif from Amazon at the moment for £20 and always be assured that you will have this little piece of kit in your pocket ready to prop up your phone and keep that screen nicely visible at all times.
