Join us for a SIGs (special interest groups) evening this September. Members will be chairing a series of groups to tackle various topics in depth. The groups will be looking at:
- Mac Beginners
- Photoshop
- iPad
- Bento
- Missing Sync
This month’s raffle prize is a Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet
There will be the usual supporting attractions of a Q&A session, a raffle and NewsByte – our roundup of the month's developments in the world of Apple.
A new addition to the forum at the end is the Apple Core. This is an in-depth look at the foundation of Mac computing. Following last month's successful session on how email works, Andrew Leigh will be leading a session on iOS4 applications - Part 3.
All this and the opportunity to chat over a beer or a plate of the pub's delicious Thai food.

Q. When is the next iLife coming?
A. Maybe September's iPod event? Maybe next year, when the developers are free?
Q. I have portable hard drives that show up in Disk Utility, but they don't show up in the finder. How can I fix that?
A.Try repairing them, when they appear in disk utility. Check your Finder preferences - to make sure they are set to appear.
Q. How do I remove menu bar items, I can't drag them off anymore?
A. You have to go into the System prefs for that item or the application preference to find the 'show in menu bar' items.
Q. I was going to buy an iPad, but I noticed that the price was the same as getting a 256GB SSD for my iMac. What should I buy?
A. Buy a hybrid drive instead. Seagate Momentus XT 500GB. It has 4GB of flash memory and puts the most accessed files onto the Flash. Upgrading an iMac is expensive though. Cheaper to get an iPad.
Q. How much computing time are you spending on the iPad?
A. 60%. Depends on what you do most. Email checking is good, and Word Processing. Couldn't update a WordPress blog with media - no file browser in the device. However, if you can get media onto your iPad you can use it. Also it can read SD cards through the camera connector. Must get the right type of SD card though.
Q. One of my folders has gone wrong with a question mark. When I click on it, it says it can't be found. When I try to move the files in the folder, you can't grab onto them. Sometimes you can grab onto them quite a way from where they are. The files are all there, but the folder is wrong.
A. Finder seems to have lost them. 1) Repair permissions. 2.) Perhaps the hard disk is corrupt - check in Disk Utility look for the S.M.A.R.T status - there may be some corrupt sectors on the drives. The directory may be ok, but the location may be corrupted. Does Disk Warrior exist for the Intel Machines? If so, that always works to rebuild the directory on the hard drive.
Q. I was looking through my iPod touch mail, and saw an inbox 2 with a load of mail from 1970 with no sender, subject etc. It comes and goes.
A. Apple had a glitch on their servers recently which was causing this.
Q. I need to delete some items from the trash and it won't do it. The Get info says that it is locked.
A. Click on Option (alt), when you select "empty the trash" in the FInder.
